Professor Jake Lynch has built a global reputation as a leading figure in peace journalism
A passionate and devoted academic, Professor Lynch has dedicated his career to the study of how conflict is presented in the media.
Professor Lynch is an Associate Professor in the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia. Since accepting the role in 2007, Professor Lynch has developed two units of study that relate to the practice of peace journalism: Conflict-Resolving Media and Conflict-Sensitive Development Practice. Professor Lynch has also taught ‘Conflict-Resolving Media’ at the School of Journalism at Cardiff University and at the Rotary Programme at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.
In addition to his work as an Associate Professor, Professor Lynch continues to write, report and broadcast regularly as a journalist working in peace journalism, as well as making documentary films. Professor Lynch’s work in this field has been recognised with several prestigious awards, including the 2017 Luxembourg Peace Prize for his contributions to peace journalism in both theory and practice.
Lynch worked for many years as a professional journalist, reporting from Westminster as a Political Correspondent for Sky News and reporting from Sydney as the Australia Correspondent for the Independent newspaper. Professor Lynch also spent five years in broadcasting, presenting television news bulletins and live studio interviews for BBC World. Professor Lynch currently serves on the editorial boards of TRANSCEND Media Service and the International Journal of Peace Studies, and also reviews articles for a number of prestigious journals.
Most recently, Professor Jake Lynch has been on secondment as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University. In this role, Professor Lynch contributes towards the teaching and research development of two research groups at the university, as well as delivering guest lectures and presenting a series of Leverhulme Public Lectures.
Outside his professional life, Professor Lynch enjoys historical fiction, having recently written and published his own debut historical novel in 2019. Professor Lynch is also an avid fan of Liverpool F.C., attending regular matches at Anfield football ground.
